Oulu’s Cultural Gem: The Madetoja Piano Competition

It has been a privilege to help organize the XIII Leevi Madetoja Piano Competition and ensure that music continues to thrive through this prestigious occasion. Under the previous artistic direction of Jouko Tötterström, the Madetoja Competition has been a cornerstone for Finnish pianists since 1988. It also plays a vital role in the cultural scene of Oulu, highlighting the importance of preserving culture in our communities.

The journey to becoming a pianist requires immense personal commitment, self-discipline, a love for music, and the support and encouragement of a dedicated team. It takes countless hours and years of practice to reach a performance level. Becoming a pianist is not just about mastering the keys; it’s about embracing a lifelong journey of learning and growth. As pianist Vladimir Horowitz said, ”The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is practice.” Supporting these talented pianists means nurturing the future of music, fostering creativity, and ensuring that music continues to inspire and move people for generations to come.

The level of talent among the pianists here is exceptionally high, and all participants should be very proud to be part of such a rewarding event.

Our organizing and artistic committees, along with the Oulu University of Applied Sciences, Oulu Conservatory, Oulu Sinfonia, and our amazing sponsors, are delighted to welcome all the pianists to this incredible event. We wish you all the best of luck and hope you have a wonderful experience here in Oulu.
