Master’s Degree in Innovative Music Performance
Master the art of innovative music performance and learn to execute creative shows in unique live events! Innovative Music Performance is a one-year graduate master’s degree programme that combines various disciplines to amplify the performance abilities of musicians and foster their research capabilities. The programme embraces a wide spectrum of musical genres, including but not limited to classical, jazz, pop, and folk.
What is the degree all about?
Throughout the programme, the importance of individuality and finding one’s unique voice and identity in musical performances are consistently highlighted. Furthermore, it offers fresh insights into how music can be integrated and made inclusive in today’s society, all of which are combined with hands-on musical performances.
The programme actively encourages creativity, self-marketing, and learning up-to-date technological skills.

Study contents
The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, focusing on concert organization. Opportunities for performances will be curated across a diverse range of potential venues.
The focus is on practical, multi-professional, and interdisciplinary learning. Emphasis is placed on cooperation with working life and on teamwork and collaboration in master´s student groups.
The studies included in the degree (60 ECTS) are:
Advanced Studies in Music Performance, Cultural Dynamics and Artist Branding (25 ECTS)
- Performance Skills: 10 ECTS
- World Music Cultures: 5 ECTS
- Resonating Communities: A Musician’s Guide to Social Impact: 5 ECTS
- Artist Branding and Promotion: 5 ECTS
Free Choice Course (5 ECTS)
- Remote Possibilities to Enhance Music Performance: 5 ECTS
The student may also opt to select courses from Oamk’s common offerings that are related to performance or subjects closely tied to the development of their project or performance plan.
Final Project: 30 ECTS
- Option 1
- 20 to 30 minutes performance project + written thesis
- Option 2
- A comprehensive research work on innovative music performance. This study could explore various topics, including, but not limited to, the integration of modern technology in music performances, cross-disciplinary approaches, cultural influences, audience engagement, sustainability in music performance, the health and well-being of musicians, and educational innovations.
Studying the master's degree programme online
You will study for the degree online. There are about 1-2 joint webinars per month, depending on your course choices. The Innovative Music Performance degree programme also includes face-to-face learning periods, which are determined by your course choices. Exercises and performances mainly require on-campus visits.
Master's thesis
The studies include a 30-credit Master’s thesis that develops the working life and the economy of the region and is started at the beginning of the studies. You will assess the development needs in your field together with the actors in working life. In carrying out and reporting on your Master’s thesis, you will demonstrate your capacity for ethical, independent, and forward-looking professional work. You will critically evaluate the results of your work and present them in an understandable way to different target groups.
Qualification and post-graduate studies
The programme will provide you with a Master’s degree level of qualification (EQF7). Post-graduate studies are offered by the Oulu University of Applied Science’s School of Professional Teacher Education and the university’s faculties.
