Tuition fees and scholarships for Master’s degrees

Tuition fees

According to the legislation, updated December 1 2024, Institutes of Higher Education in Finland must charge tuition fees from the students coming outside of the European Union and the European Economic Area when applying to English taught degree programmes.

For non-EU/EEA students, the tuition fee for Master’s degrees is 10,000 € for one academic year and 5000 € for each additional semester to complete the program.

Tuition fee is charged from:

  • the non-EU/EEA students (including UK citizens) studying in the English degree programmes, who do not hold the Finnish residence permit that gives the exemption from the tuition fees.
  • the students who have continuous (type A) residence permit in Finland granted in the bases of studies
  • the students who have continuous (type A) residence permit in Finland granted in the bases of work, but whose first residence permit in Finland was granted in the bases of studies
  • the students who have continuous (type A) residence permit in Finland based on family ties and their family member’s first residence permit in Finland was granted in the bases of studies.

Exemption from the tuition fee is given for:

  • Citizens of  EU/EEA countries or Switzerland or the family members of such persons who have a residence card for a family member of an EU citizen in Finland
  • permanent (type P) residence permit in Finland
  • a long-term resident’s EU residence permit for third-country citizens (type P-EU permit) in Finland
  • a residence permit based on temporary protection
  • an EU Blue Card in Finland
  • Right of residence under the withdrawal agreement (Brexit residence permit)
  • continuous (type A) residence permit in Finland IF it is granted on the basis of employment AND if the applicant’s first residence permit in Finland was not granted on the basis of studies
  • continuous (type A) residence permit in Finland based on family ties IF the first residence permit of the family member was not granted on the basis of studies

Scholarship

The scholarship for the applicants admitted to the master’s degree programmes are awarded the scholarship of 10% from the paid tuition fee if  the studies are accomplished within the set target time (1 academic year/60 credits, 1,5 academic year/90 credits).

The scholarship is applied and awarded retrospectively. Graduating student is advised about applying the scholarship when he/she is applying for degree diploma.

In addition the early bird discount for these applicants is 1000€. Applicants are required to confirm their study place and enroll for the academic year within the 7 days from receiving the study place to receive the early bird discount.

Scholarships are taxable under Finnish legislation.

Brexit

From 2022 onward, UK citizens residing in Finland as well as their family members should hold right of residence under the withdrawal agreement (Brexit permit) in order to be exempted from the tuition fee. The permit must be granted by Finnish Immigration Services. Read more about Brexit at the website of Finnish Immigration Services.

Applicants who are UK citizens and do not hold right of residence under the withdrawal agreement are required to pay the tuition fee. There are scholarships available.
