CANEMURE – Towards Carbon Neutral Municipalities and Regions in Finland, LIFE17 IPC/FI/000002, LIFE-IP CANEMURE_FINLAND

1 November 2018 - 31 October 2024

Agriculture and Forestry

Northern Ostrobothnia is involved in the nationwide Canemure project, where Oulu University of Applied Sciences acts as the regional coordinator. Canemure is a six-year EU Life project that implements the goals of Finland’s national climate policy. The project involves practical climate actions, promotes regional climate work, and supports the Hinku network with the assistance of experts. The project is led by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE).

Project Objectives

  • Support processes for creating a sustainable municipal structure and low-carbon, energy-efficient production and consumption.
  • Promote decentralized renewable energy production.
  • Promote the transition of agriculture and forestry to low-emission soil management methods, especially in peatlands.
  • Improve the energy efficiency of construction.
  • Support smart and low-carbon mobility.

The Canemure project operates in seven regions: South Karelia, Pirkanmaa, Northern Ostrobothnia, Päijät-Häme, Satakunta, Uusimaa, and Southwest Finland.

The Finnish Environment Institute, Tampere University, Natural Resources Institute, and the Finnish Meteorological Institute form an expert network within the Canemure project. This network generates new information and develops tools suitable for various target groups to support regional work.
