Hybrid Laboratory
The electric and district heating networks built into the Hybrid Laboratory enable the study and development of electrical, automation, energy, and building technology systems.
Hybrid laboratory is a unique research and development environment for automation, energy, HVAC, and electrical engineering. With the electrical and district heating networks built into the premises, it is possible to research and develop systems related to electrical, automation, energy, and building technology. Companies can utilize the data collected in the laboratory, for example, in the development of electricity consumption flexibility, intelligent maintenance, energy forecasts, and big data applications.
Energy efficiency in building technology
The hybrid laboratory, jointly operated by Oulu University of Applied Sciences and the University of Oulu, is used for education, research, development, and collaboration with companies. The hybrid laboratory includes laboratories for energy and automation engineering as well as electrical and building technology.
In the hybrid laboratory, it is possible to study and learn about, for example, the heat losses of energy production techniques, the control of building technology systems, programming of smart lighting, and network optimization. The goal is to achieve a more energy-efficient and low-carbon built environment.
Various electricity production and storage methods can be studied in the laboratory. The laboratory has methods to collect related data into databases. Based on this data, for example, the electricity production of solar panels can be evaluated and analyzed. The laboratory also includes simulations of a multi-story building’s heating system, allowing students to learn practically about the operation of heat control systems.

A unique environment for both study and business use
The hybrid laboratory is utilized in the engineering education at Oulu University of Applied Sciences.
In this environment, students get hands-on experience with energy and automation engineering, as well as electrical and building technology environments, and can simulate various situations they will encounter in their future careers. For businesses, the facility enables testing, product development, piloting, simulation, and research in laboratory conditions.
A comprehensive digital twin of the heating network, electrical network, and smart electrical system allows for both on-site and remote teaching and research use. The data generated by the laboratory’s database can be utilized in various ways. Similar conditions suitable for teaching and research use are not readily available elsewhere in Northern Finland.
