Implementation of studies

The structure of the studies will be based on a blended learning model: distance learning sessions using online and video conferencing tools, and 3-4 face-to-face sessions in Finland.

The face-to-face sessions will take place at various times throughout the academic year starting with a short session in Oulu with all participants. The exact dates will be announced later, but the session will be held in August or September.

Autumn introduction session (4 days in Oulu) Dates TBC

Key topics: program structure, introductions to Finnish arts practice and innovation, arts entrepreneurship, research methodologies, clarification of performance arts projects challenges

Online components: Continued self-paced assignments covering performance arts innovation, entrepreneurship and digital futures as well as research thesis topics.

Late autumn session (5 days in Oulu) (dates TBC)

Key topics: innovation, transversal skills and sustainability, production design and digital performance essentials. 

Online components:

Monthly video conference sessions (3 hours each August, September, October and November)

Continued self-paced assignments on core content

Winter session (5 days in Oulu) (dates TBC)

Key topics: business planning and performance logistics,  production testing and data collection.

Online components:

Monthly video conference sessions (3 hours each in January, February, March, April and May), Continued self-paced assignments on core content

Spring session (4 days in Oulu) (dates TBC)

Final wrap-up workshop including presentation of performance projects at public event (location TBC)

Tuition fee for non-EU/EEA students 10 000€ per academic year. Scholarship available.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must have higher education degree from Finland or abroad or higher vocational level diploma in Finland.

In addition two (2) years of field specific work experience is required after the graduation. If applicant has completed post-secondary or higher vocational level diploma in Finland in any field of education, the work experience between those diplomas and higher education diploma is taken into consideration.

The qualification must have been completed by the July 11 2024. The two years of work experience required for eligibility must have been acquired by the July 31 2024.

The applicant must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in the English language during the application. More information regarding the language requirements is available here.

If the experience is in the arts sector, artistic activities may be accepted instead of work experience if demonstrated within a portfolio (Law 932/2014). Work experience will be indicated in full months.

Applicants should convert part-time work into full-time equivalents such that 150 hours or 20 working days lasting at least 7 hours per day correspond to one month of work. Work experience does not have to be continuous or obtained working for the same employer. The amount of work experience points awarded for parallel employment relationships may only equate to the amount awarded for full-time employment.

Military or non-military national service, women’s voluntary military service or child-care leave will not be counted as work experience.

Student selection

The student selection is two-phased: advance assignment and interview. Applicants must pass the advance assignment in order to be invited to take part in the interview. 

Applicants are required to present the following documents before the interviews:

1. Cover letter

2. Curriculum vitae

3. Preliminary plan describing a proposed experimental performance/installation/project

The advance assignment is evaluated on a scale of pass / fail. The document should be submitted in English in pdf-format by uploading it to the online application on 24 January 2024 at 3 pm Finnish time at the latest.

If necessary, the document may include links to, for example, videos or home pages. It is the applicant’s responsibility that the links function properly.

The advance assignment

1. Cover letter

The cover letter should be minimum 600 words. The purpose of the cover letter is to outline the applicant’s motivation and to share his / her interests and goals and the readiness to study in the program. In practice, it explains the reason why the applicant should be accepted as a student. The applicant describes his / her career and plans and how the studies are related to it. The applicant also presents how he / she intends to organize the studies taking into account work and life situation. The applicant also evaluates his / her current skills in relation to the curriculum of the applied education.

2. Curriculum vitae

The curriculum vitae (CV) should be presented in a tight format. It should show, among other things, completed studies, work history and a list of publications if applicable

3. Preliminary plan 

The preliminary plan should be minimum 600 words.

The development task outlines the preliminary topic (or part of it) of the student’s future thesis/project. However, the thesis topic can be changed during the studies if necessary. In the plan, the applicant must describe one or more experimental project(s) that they expect to work on during their studies. The development task must be related to digital performance. The plan should be detailed and offer a description and timeline of future work necessary for completing this experiment. It should also outline efforts already completed or partnerships established to support the experimental project (if such efforts or partnerships already exist). The plan will be used to assess the student’s approach to a work-based project. Overall, a University of Applied Sciences Master’s degree focuses on research that promotes working life and / or cultural development

The interview

The maximum number of applicants invited to an interview is twice the number of available study places.

The interview period will take place in March-April 2024. Interview is evaluated on a scale of 0 to 100 points (min. points 20).
