Using generative AI in your studies

At Oamk, we encourage our students to use generative AI responsibly.  Using AI is an important working life skill, but using AI alone will not develop other skills needed in the workplace. Higher education requires the ability to think critically and process information. Oamk’s AI guidelines are based on Arene’s recommendations for pedagogically sustainable use of AI in universities of applied sciences.

Oamk's AI guidelines

The use of AI to support your own learning is permitted. At the start of the course, the teacher will provide guidance on using AI in learning tasks by employing the traffic light model.

You can use AI to support your own learning, such as preparing for exams, studying a topic, brainstorming, searching for information and time management. Feel free to experiment with AI, but be aware that AI can give incorrect and biased answers. The use of AI in learning tasks can be limited and/or extended by the use of traffic light colours.

The use of AI in learning tasks is permitted in principle; however, any use of AI must be clearly reported in a way specified by the course teacher. The use of AI may also be prohibited for justified reasons. Teachers will design learning tasks taking into account the potential and challenges of AI.

Ask your teacher which colour of the traffic light model will be used in the course/learning task. The orange colour allows for the use of AI in a variety of ways, but students should be open about which AI they have used and how they have used it to create their output. It is not intended that the AI will be used to produce the entire learning task and therefore the use of AI may affect the assessment. Remember to use AI responsibly and judiciously (read more in section 4).

Learning tasks may require the use of AI, as for example Copilot AI chat is one of the systems supported at Oamk. However, students cannot be required to enter into a personal contract with a third party or to pay for applications.

Oamk has Copilot and Gemini AI chats, both of which can be accessed using Oamk student IDs. We recommend that you check out Copilot in particular, either at https://copilot.microsoft.com or in the sidebar of your Edge browser. For further instructions on how to use Copilot, please visit the ICT Oulu page. If your learning task requires the use of AI, please ask your teacher for specific guidance on how to use the application.

AI-generated content must not be presented as your own output. AI is not a source of scientific text and AI-generated information must be verified from a source that meets the requirements of academic source criticism. The thesis must not contain text produced directly by AI.

If the assignment allows the use of AI to assist in the production of text and/or other media, it is important to remember that you are responsible for your output. This means that you should always check the content and facts. The AI has no copyright, and you cannot claim the AI’s output as your own. The thesis must not contain any text produced directly by the AI.

The use of AI must comply with the Oamk Privacy Policy and data security requirements.

The use of AI must not compromise data protection. When using AI chats, it is your responsibility to ensure that you do not share sensitive material or material containing personal data with them. Copilot and Gemini, which are used at Oamk, are secure services when used with student IDs. So please make sure you are logged in before using the service.
