Purku – Deconstruction as Part of Urban Development – Eco-efficient Utilization of Demolition Materials in Infrastructure and Real Estate Construction
1 January 2024 - 30 April 2026
Engineering and Engineering TradesConstruction in zoning areas is increasingly starting with the demolition of old buildings. The main goal of the PURKU project is to develop a new construction operation model that reconciles the needs of demolition and construction sites (quantities of materials, quality, schedule, locations of sites, etc.).
The new operation model would enable more efficient utilization of demolition site stone materials and a more environmentally sustainable raw material flow. Primarily, the stone material from the demolition site is intended to be used directly in the construction project on the site or in its immediate vicinity.
In the project, demolition stone materials are tested in pilot structures. The testing aims to determine whether the stone materials meet the quality requirements set by the MARA regulation for infrastructure construction and to assess the impacts of stone crushing on dust, noise, and vibration in grid-planned areas.
Funding and Collaboration in the Project
This project, funded by the Just Transition Fund (JTF), has been granted financing by the Council of Oulu Region. In addition to the EU, the project is funded by the City of Oulu (Oulu Innovation Alliance) and Metso Ltd. The project is coordinated by the University of Oulu, and the Oulu University of Applied Sciences participates in the project implementation.
