XIII Leevi Madetoja piano competition
Program
17–30-year-old category rounds and programs
Competitors will perform in three rounds, with the first two rounds being eliminatory.
The program must include Finnish music composed in 1980 or later AND music by Leevi Madetoja. Additionally, it is recommended that the program includes music composed by non-male composers.
Round I
Sunday – Monday, January 19–20, 2025
Duration up to 20 minutes.
- Music by a composer born before 1700
- An etude by one of the following composers: F. Chopin, F. Liszt, S. Rachmaninoff, A. Scriabin
- Free choice program
Round II
Tuesday, January 21, 2025
Duration up to 30 minutes.
- Music from the Classical period (1770-1830)
- An etude by one of the following composers: B. Bartók, C. Debussy, G. Ligeti, W. Lutosławski, O. Messiaen, S. Prokofiev, E. Rautavaara, I. Stravinsky, C. Szymanowski, or an etude composed in 1950 or later.
- Free choice program
Round III
Concert final. Oulu Symphony Concert, Friday, January 24, 2025, at 6:00 PM. Madetoja Hall.
One of the following concertos:
- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, 1st movement [15′]
- Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37, 1st movement [18′]
- Robert Schumann: Piano Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 54, 1st movement [15′]
- Edvard Grieg: Piano Concerto No. 1 in A minor, 1st movement [13′], OR movements II & III [18′]
- Sergei Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No. 1 in D-flat major, Op. 10 [16′]
*Those selected for Round III will have the opportunity to rehearse with the orchestra twice. Own rehearsal and general rehearsal. Exact times will be announced during the competition.
Registration for the competition opens in October 2024. More specific times will be provided once all applications are received. Changes to this schedule may occur.
13–16-year-old category rounds and programs

- Music from the Classical period (1770–1830)
- Free choice program – at least two pieces

Under 13-year-old category program
The program must include Finnish music composed in 1980 or later. Additionally, it is recommended that the program also includes music composed by non-male composers.
Friday – Saturday, January 24–25, 2025

- Music by a composer born before 1700
- Music from the Classical period (1770–1830)
- Free choice program
