A record 83 young pianists will compete in the national Leevi Madetoja Piano Competition in Oulu on 19–25 January 2025. This nationally acclaimed event is open to piano students in Finnish music schools, vocational upper secondary education or universities of applied sciences, including foreign exchange students present in the academic year 2024–2025. There are three competition categories: under 13-year-olds, 13-16-year-olds and 17–30-year-olds.

The competition is now being held for the 13th time and has grown significantly over the years. The competition will be held at Oulu University of Applied Sciences’ Poiju Hall, Linnanmaa campus and Oulu Music Centre. This year, the competition will be led by the new principal lecturer of Oulu University of Applied Sciences, pianist Vanessa Cunha.

The concerto finale in the 17–30-year-old category will be held in Madetoja Hall as a concert by the Oulu Symphony Orchestra on Friday 24th January at 18.00 conducted by Esa Heikkilä. The jury of the competition consists of experienced piano artists and pedagogues. The chairman is Jukka Juvonen and the other members of the jury are Laura Mikkola, Ulla Roiko-Jokela and Mika Rännäli.

Oulu University of Applied Sciences organises the piano competition in cooperation with Oulu Conservatory, Oulu Symphony, Centria University of Applied Sciences and POTKU – Northern Ostrobothnia Arts and Culture Support Association. Oulu University of Applied Sciences will communicate the results of the competition in real time as the competition progresses.

We warmly welcome the public to follow this significant national competition. One of the important tasks of the competition is to highlight piano works by Oulu-based composer Leevi Madetoja and to invite Finland’s most talented pianists to compete in Oulu. Welcome to this musical journey and witness the rise of future stars of classical piano music.
