XIII Leevi Madetoja piano competition

Rules

Oulu University of Applied Sciences organizes a piano competition in Oulu in collaboration with the Oulu Conservatory, POTKU – Pohjois-Pohjanmaan taiteen ja kulttuurin tuki ry, and Oulun seudun pianomusiikin ystävät ry. The competition’s concerto final will be held in collaboration with the Oulu Symphony Orchestra.

I The competition is open to individuals studying piano at music institutions, vocational secondary schools, or universities of applied sciences in Finland, including foreign exchange students present during the 2024–2025 academic year. Students of the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki are not eligible to participate.

II The competition is divided into three categories: A) under 13 years old, B) 13–16 years old, C) 17–30 years old. Each competitor’s category is determined by the competition starting date (20.1.2025). Categories A and B are intended to assess and encourage competitors, and feedback is provided by the jury. The prizes for category C are defined in the prize list, but the jury may distribute the prizes differently based on their assessment.

Each institution can send participants to the competition as follows:

  • Two students per institution for the under 13 years old category
  • Two students per institution for the 13–16 years old category
  • Three students per institution for the 17–30 years old category, four for Universities of Applied Sciences

For a justified reason, an institution may apply to the competition committee for the right to send one additional pre-named competitor to one category. The competition committee decides on this case-by-case, and the decision cannot be appealed. The organizer may also limit the number of competitors if the number of registrants is too large for the schedule.

III Registration for the competition is done via an electronic form. The registration period ends on Monday, 29.11.2024 at 16:00.

IV The participation fee per competitor is 100 euros for the 13–16 years old and 17–30 years old categories, and 70 euros for the under 13 years old category. The participation fee is non-refundable if participation is canceled.

Each competitor will receive a certificate of participation.

V The playing order for all categories will be drawn after the registration period ends, and will be announced on the competition intranet, with login details sent to participants by email by 13.12.2024.

VI Competitors and their teachers are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, and meals.

VII The attached schedules may be subject to changes if necessary.

VIII Competitors have the opportunity to receive feedback on their performances from the jury members according to a schedule announced during the competition.

IX The competition events are public. The organizers have the right to record, broadcast, video, televise, or stream the competitors’ performances, including their own compositions, without compensation. Photography and video recording without the organizers’ permission is prohibited during the competition.

X The jury has the right to stop a performance if the maximum playing time is exceeded and to limit playing time if the competition schedule requires it.

XI For questions related to the competition program or arrangements, please contact the competition office. In unclear cases, the organizer will make the decisions.

XII The organizers have the right to cancel or postpone the event due to force majeure.
