Haapavesi-Siikalatva region’s eco-energy – operating model for rural hybrid renewable energy (EKOENERGIA)
1 September 2023 - 31 August 2026
Agriculture and ForestryThe project aims to create an operational model for rural hybrid, locally centralized, renewable energy production, distribution, storage, and consumption. The longer-term goal is to make the Haapavesi-Siikalatva region a pioneer and leader in eco-energy and circular economy. The operational model developed in the project can also be utilized in other target areas.
Objectives
The project aims to create an operational model for rural hybrid, locally centralized energy production, distribution, storage, and consumption. In the operation model, the focus is especially on biogas, solar energy and wind power and the possibilities to coordinate different forms of energy production. This model will lower the barriers to transitioning to renewable energy production and starting new businesses by providing information on earning logic, legislative constraints, and investment needs. A key objective is also to promote cooperation between different actors to create a regional eco-energy network, initiate regional energy production, enhance energy efficiency, and improve energy security. Additionally, the project aims to promote nutrient recycling development and enhance the logistics chains related to different stages of energy production. The project not only activates new development activities but also supports self-initiated development activities within the region. The longer-term goal is to establish Haapavesi-Siikalatva as a leader in eco-energy and circular economy.
Measures
The project’s measures are divided into eight separate work packages:
WP1: Mapping of biomasses available for biogas production
WP2: Investigation of other renewable energy sources
WP3: Research related to the storage and use of renewable energy
WP4: Mapping and describing the roles and earning logic of participants in rural hybrid energy production
WP5: Development of process side stream utilization as part of eco-energy production
WP6: Creation and piloting of a regional eco-energy network and operational model
WP7: Study trips related to eco-energy production and inter-regional cooperation
WP8: Project management and communication
Funding and Collaboration
The project is co-funded by the European Union, funded by the Just Transition Fund (JTF), with funding provided by the North Ostrobothnia Regional Council. The project is jointly implemented by the Haapavesi-Siikalatva regional municipal federation and the Oulu University of Applied Sciences.
